Gather your leather totes and dog toys to Redstone, CO for a family vacation of fun!
Redstone, Colorado is a unique little outdoorsy community surrounded by accessible places to pitch a tent and 4-wheeling spots and the rushing Crystal river, and presenting a surprisingly fresh (if tiny) art scene in its downtown shops.
I first happened upon Redstone, just up highway 133 from Carbondale, in the beginning of the year, when their celebration of the cold months was in its full swing. The one place to fill up in townhad, as usual, taped up its two old-school gas pumps in shiny Christmas wrapping paper with huge golden bows on top, and the annual snow sculpturecompetition was about to commence. Redstone also holds gives sled dogs and their runners a chance to show off each year and always has something going on like the Winter Fest in February.
In the warmer months, Redstone is a fantastic place to splash around in the river, go for a hike, and then head over to one of several brightly painted down-home restaurants, with everything from burgers to fancy salads on the menu. Look up the town’s tourism website to get a quaint little cabin near the river and river rafting when the river is high from fresh mountain snow melt. You might also enjoy places for rent on the town’s main street!
A hike all the locals will recommend near Redstone is Avalanche Creek, with a trail head next to an accessible campground, or you could jog on up the trail with your backpack to set up camp. The trail head requires a bit of a drive on unpaved roads (not really a rough road, but also not meant for the family minivan), which gives you a bit of adventure at the very beginning of the excursion. You can backpack in all 11 miles to Avalanche lake, but it’s a hike that is also nice for as long as you want it to be,so you can turn back whenever you run out of granola bars.
The historic aspect of Redstone is evident even before you get off of highway 133, as you’ll see an impressive collection of coke ovens across the highway from the town. In the riverare half-submerged chunks of luminous marble washed down the river from the marble mine just up the road. Also part of the town’s visible history, there’s the lovely historic Redstone Inn—also known as Redstone Castle. This handsome landmark structure, constructed using—can you guess?—red stone, holds big special events nearly every month, offers sleigh rides around the holidays and carriage rides in the summer, and regularly provides live music during supper. There’s nowhere better to find accommodation for the night, or why not just take a tour and find out about some of Redstone’s history.
As you prepare for your Redstone adventure, make sure you check out the inn and town’s websites for upcoming happenings, and pack your rock or ice-climbing gear, depending on the season! Redstone is the kind of place with no lack of the amenities you’ll need for a uiniquely Colorado experience. Visit Glenwood Springs Colorado

Gather your leather totes and cat toys to Redstone, CO for a family vacation of fun!
Redstone, CO is a fun little outdoorsy community surrounded by family-friendly camping and 4-wheeling spots and the lively Crystal river, and boasting a tiny, fascinating art scene in several shops scattered quaintly between vacation cabins.
I first happened upon Redstone, just up highway 133 from Carbondale, in the winter, when the powdery snow piled up at least a foot deep. The one place to fill up aroundhad, as usual, gift-wrapped its two pumps, and the locally famed snow sculptingcompetition was about to get underway. Redstone also holds gives sled dogs and their runners a chance to show off each year and of course a Winter Fest in February.
During the summer, Redstone is the perfect place to wade in the river, go hiking, and then head over to one of several brightly painted local diners, with everything from burgers to fancy salads on the menu. Try local campgrounds and resorts for cabin rentals right next to the river and river rafting during the runoff season. Of course, don’t forget to check for places for rent on the town’s main street!
A trail you should try near Redstone is Avalanche Creek, which also has some great spots for car camping, or you could jog on up the trail with your backpack to set up camp. The trail head is off of a fairly mild dirt road (I was fine in my Subaru, but I don’t recommend taking the family Honda down this track), which gives you a bit of adventure at the very beginning of the excursion. You can backpack in all 11 miles to Avalanche lake, but it’s a good trail for meanderinguntil your kiddos get tired and want to go back and roast marshmallows.
The historical nature of Redstone is apparent even before you get off of highway 133, since there will be a long row of coke ovens on the other side of the road as you make your turn into town. Also speaking to Redstone’s historyare half-submerged chunks of stark white marble carried downstream from the hills and riverbanks of Marble, Colorado. And then there’s the elegant old-timey Redstone Inn—sometimes called Redstone Castle. This handsome landmark structure, made of—can you guess?—red stone, holds big special events throughout the the year, offers sleigh rides in the winter and carriage rides in the summer, and often offers live music during dinner. It’s a great place to find lodging for the night, or you can simply get a tour and find out about some of Redstone’s history.
Before you go, make sure you check out the inn and town’s websites for special events, and pack your swimsuits or snowshoes, depending on the season! Redstone is the kind of little destination with no lack of the amenities you’ll hope for to have an off-the-beaten-path adventure. Visit Glenwood

Gather your leather handbags and cat toys to Redstone, Colorado for a family vacation of fun!
Redstone is a unique little mountain town surrounded by accessible camping and 4-wheeling spots and the icy but inviting Crystal river, and boasting a surprisingly fresh (if tiny) art scene in its downtown shops.
I first happened upon Redstone, just up highway 133 from Carbondale, in the beginning of the year, when the fountain in the center of town was frozen into a smooth glacier blue colossus. The one convenience store aroundhad, as usual, gift-wrapped its two pumps, and the locally famed snow sculpturecompetition was about to begin. Redstone also holds gives sled dogs and their runners a chance to show off each year and a lively Winter Fest in February.
During the summer, Redstone is the perfect place to dunk yourself in the river, go hiking, and then duck into one of several imaginatively decorated down-home restaurants, that serve both hamburgers and seared ahi tuna. Look up the town’s tourism website for cabin rentals right next to the river and river rafting when the river is high from fresh mountain snow melt. Of course, don’t forget to check for houses and cabins right in the heart of town!
A trail you should try just outside of Redstone is Avalanche Creek, right next to a great family-friendly campground, and backpacking is allowed as well. This hike is a ways down a dirt road (I was fine in my Subaru, but I don’t recommend taking the family Honda down this track), which gives you a bit of adventure at the very beginning of the excursion. Although it’s 11 miles one way to get to Avalance Lake, it’s a hike that is also nice for as long as you want it to be,until your kiddos get tired and want to go back and roast marshmallows.
The historic aspect of Redstone is evident even before you make the turn into town, as you’ll see an impressive row of coke ovens opposite the town’s main turnoff. In the riverare half-submerged chunks of stark white marble which the river has carried down from the aptly named Marble, Colorado, just up the road. Also part of the town’s visible history, there’s the elegant old-timey Redstone Inn—sometimes called Redstone Castle. This beautiful well-loved edifice, made of—you guessed it—red stone, hosts big special events each season, offers sleigh rides in the snowy months and carriage rides when the weather turns warm, and routinely offers musical performances during dinner. It’s a great place to find a comfortable room for the night, or why not just get a tour and learn some of Redstone’s history.
Before you go, make sure you browse the inn and town’s websites to see what special things are happening, and grab your swimsuits or snowshoes, depending on the season! Redstone is the kind of place with no lack of the amenities you’ll want to have a delightfully unusual escapade. Visit Glenwood Springs Colorado

Another historic landmark there’s the striking historic Redstone Inn—or Redstone Castle. This beautiful old building, built out of—I bet you can guess—red stone, sponsors a number of special events throughout the the year, offers sleigh rides in the snowy months and carriage rides in the summer, and often provides musicians during evening meal. There’s nowhere better to find accommodation for the night, or you can simply take a tour and find out about some of Redstone’s history.
Before you go, be sure to check out the inn and town’s websites to see what special things are happening, and pack your rock or ice-climbing gear, depending on the season! Redstone is the kind of place with all the amenities you’ll want in a delightfully unusual escapade. Visit Glenwood Springs

Gather your leather totes and cat toys to Redstone, Colorado for a family vacation of fun!
Redstone is a unique little outdoorsy community surrounded by accessible places to pitch a tent and 4-wheeling spots and the lively Crystal river, and presenting a tiny, fascinating art scene in several shops scattered quaintly between vacation cabins.
I first discovered Redstone, just up highway 133 from Carbondale, in the beginning of the year, when the fountain in the center of town was frozen into a smooth glacier blue colossus. The one place to fill up in the areahad, as usual, taped up its two old-school gas pumps in shiny Christmas wrapping paper with huge golden bows on top, and the locally famed snow sculptingcompetition was about to get underway. Redstone also holds gives sled dogs and their runners a chance to show off each year and of course a Winter Fest in February.
During the summer, Redstone is a fantastic place to dunk yourself in the river, take a hike, and then head over to one of several colorful (their paint jobs are a wonder to behold) food joints, that serve both hamburgers and seared ahi tuna. Try local campgrounds and resorts to get a quaint little cabin right next to the valley’s lovely and burbling water source and whitewater adventures when the river is high from fresh mountain snow melt. You might also enjoy houses and cabins on the town’s main street!
A hike all the locals will recommend just outside of Redstone is Avalanche Creek, right next to a great family-friendly campground, as well as good spots for backpacking on the trail or at the lake. This trail is off of a fairly mild dirt road (I was fine in my Subaru, but I don’t recommend taking the family Honda down this track), for an immediate taste of the wild, even before you get out of the car. Don’t be intimidated by the 11 mile trail, since it’s a great trail to just wander a ways downso you can turn back whenever you run out of granola bars.
The rich history of Redstone is evident even before you see the town, since there will be an impressive line of coke ovens on the other side of the road as you make your turn into town. In the riverare washed up pieces of pale marble washed down the river from the aptly named Marble, Colorado, just up the road. Also part of the town’s visible history, there’s the elegant , well-preserved Redstone Inn—sometimes called Redstone Castle. This handsome well-loved structure, made of—I bet you can guess—red stone, holds quite a few special events throughout the the year, offers sleigh rides in the winter and carriage rides when the weather turns warm, and routinely has musical performances with dinner. The Inn is the place to find a comfortable room for the night, or just take a tour and find out about some of Redstone’s history.
Before you go, be sure to browse the inn and town’s websites to see what special things are happening, and bring your hiking shoes or cross-country skis, depending on the season! Redstone is the kind of town with all the amenities you’ll want to have a uiniquely Colorado experience. Visit Glenwood

My favorite hike in the Redstone is Avalanche Creek, which also has some great spots for car camping, or you could jog on up the trail with your backpack to set up camp. You can backpack in all 11 miles to Avalanche lake, but it’s a hike that is also nice for as long as you want it to be,so you can turn back whenever you run out of granola bars.
