Redstone, Colorado is a unique little outdoorsy community surrounded by accessible places to pitch a tent and 4-wheeling spots and the rushing Crystal river, and presenting a surprisingly fresh (if tiny) art scene in its downtown shops.

I first happened upon Redstone, just up highway 133 from Carbondale, in the beginning of the year, when their celebration of the cold months was in its full swing. The one place to fill up in townhad, as usual, taped up its two old-school gas pumps in shiny Christmas wrapping paper with huge golden bows on top, and the annual snow sculpturecompetition was about to commence. Redstone also holds gives sled dogs and their runners a chance to show off each year and always has something going on like the Winter Fest in February.

In the warmer months, Redstone is a fantastic place to splash around in the river, go for a hike, and then head over to one of several brightly painted down-home restaurants, with everything from burgers to fancy salads on the menu. Look up the town’s tourism website to get a quaint little cabin near the river and river rafting when the river is high from fresh mountain snow melt. You might also enjoy places for rent on the town’s main street!

A hike all the locals will recommend near Redstone is Avalanche Creek, with a trail head next to an accessible campground, or you could jog on up the trail with your backpack to set up camp. The trail head requires a bit of a drive on unpaved roads (not really a rough road, but also not meant for the family minivan), which gives you a bit of adventure at the very beginning of the excursion. You can backpack in all 11 miles to Avalanche lake, but it’s a hike that is also nice for as long as you want it to be,so you can turn back whenever you run out of granola bars.

The historic aspect of Redstone is evident even before you get off of highway 133, as you’ll see an impressive collection of coke ovens across the highway from the town. In the riverare half-submerged chunks of luminous marble washed down the river from the marble mine just up the road. Also part of the town’s visible history, there’s the lovely historic Redstone Inn—also known as Redstone Castle. This handsome landmark structure, constructed using—can you guess?—red stone, holds big special events nearly every month, offers sleigh rides around the holidays and carriage rides in the summer, and regularly provides live music during supper. There’s nowhere better to find accommodation for the night, or why not just take a tour and find out about some of Redstone’s history.

As you prepare for your Redstone adventure, make sure you check out the inn and town’s websites for upcoming happenings, and pack your rock or ice-climbing gear, depending on the season!
