They assert that when you get a new puppydog, you need to definitely start thinking about how you would train him at this instant.

Here are the topmost tricks that would help you in coaching your new best mate!

Do the crate coaching! One of the best things you can do for your little puppy is to have crate training for him. It is claimed that dogs truly don't want to make their sleeping area dirty, so if you purchase a crate that is only sufficiently big for your dog to lie down in at ease, it will go a long way in helping you to potty train him. You can put your dog in the crate at night or when you're away from your house.

Be uniform and consistent! You should feed your dog and go with him outside on a definite and common schedule. Furthermore, you can take him out constantly when you're beginning to let him find out how to puppy toilet training.

Give your pet praise! This is actually critical and valuable. You have to ensure you catch your puppy when he is doing great things; praise it for doing such good deeds. Your praises would definitely inspire him to do again good behavior. You can try to do this instead of punishing negative deeds.

Persuade against him from biting or nipping. Rather than having your dog being scolded, a way to hold over your rude dog is to make him believe you're in great pain when he is biting or nipping you. He is going to be so surprised that he ' is likely to stop straight away. If this would not work, you can try trading a chew toy for your hand or pant leg. The exchange trick also works when he's into your chosen shoes. He will have an inclination towards a toy or bone.

Do not punish your dog. You can try ignoring any accidents in your home. Never penalise or castigate your dog for going indoors as such action will simply make the difficulty worse. ]

Avoid having your dog on any training pads or paper. To potty-train your dog, stay away from using coaching pads and paper because these will only condition your puppy to do potty activities inside your place; this gives him the assumption going to the loo inside is welcome.

Potty Train The Puppy Use Dog Trainer Bells

Hang your dog training bells on the inside knob of the door that your dog uses to go outside. If your dog uses more than one door, you should hang them on those doors, also.

Note: A good set of dog training bells has the hanging loop is handily split and fitted with hook and loop tape to safely attach to each kind of knob and handle.

Choose a "Potty Training Command" for your dog

We suggest the plain and simple: "Let's go make!". Be sure that everybody in your home uses the same command with your dog, as consistency is crucial.

Getting started

We feel the best time to start potty training your puppy is first thing in the morning when you know your dog actually has to make! While stating your "Potty coaching Command", take your dog's paw and gradually swat it against the dog obedience training bells. Since he's going to be needing to make urgently, only guide them to ring the bells two fast times. While doing this, give them words of support such as: "Good boy, good bells" and "Ring the bells, let's go make!". Note: if your dog is so little that they can't reach the bells while standing, gradually pop your dog up onto their back legs and guide a front paw to the bells.

Do Not give them treats at this time. You do not need to incidentally train your dog to think that ringing the bell is a trick! Only AFTER your dog goes out to make (and essentially makes) do you then reward them with a treat. Again, no treat unless they actually alleviates themselves!

Repetition

Repeat the above coaching technique every time you take them out to make. Be consistent and diligent with this training, and your dog will soon be ringing the bells by themselves!

It is also vital that you continue to praise your puppy when they ring the dog training bells , as it will further reinforce this positive form of communicating their needs.

Additionally, if you have one or two dogs in your household, they can all be bell trained simultaneously. It isn't relevant if you're potty coaching a pup or an old dog, they can all learn to use bells! Some dogs catch on in days, while others take longer - even up to 4 weeks. Bide your time and, again, use lots of positive beefing up. Once your dog has mastered the bell ringing, feel free to take your dog training bells on the path to Grandma's house - or even a hotel room! Instantly show your dog where you've hung their bells. Then they'll know, wherever the bells are hanging, is the door they're going to use to go outside to make.

By following these easy rules, you should shortly be well on the way to potty training your little dog .

Choosing The Best Dog Chow For Your Dog

Dogs have lived with us for over 15, 000 years, but it was only in the mid-1800’s that the first food specifically designed for dogs was invented. Even then, it wasn’t until after the Second World War that the dog food industry started its ascent towards the multi-billion dollar colossus that it is today.

So what were dogs fed for the thousands of years before then? The truth is they were pretty much left to scrounge or hunt for their own meals. Occasionally, they may have been thrown a bone from the master’s table or given a treat by a kindly soul.

As dogs began to become more integral to the human family, they started to be fed more regular meals by their guardians. But these would have mainly been scraps from the table or the kitchen.

With the advent of the information age, there has been an explosion of television programs, websites and magazines about dogs. People have become more informed about dog nutrition, and more concerned about dog health.

There have been volumes written on canine nutrition, as well as the introduction of premium and super premium dog food brands. Add to that things like the raw dog food diet and it's easy to see why the average person can become quite confused about the best food for their dog.

So, I hear you ask, what food is best for my dog?

Well, depending on who you listen to, it could be anything from raw meat and vegetables, cooked homemade meals, or a premium, vet-approved brand of kibble.

All of these approaches have merit. But the important thing is balance and a menu that caters to the dog's omnivorous nature. All good dog food diets, whether raw, dry or home cooked, need to take this into account.

Try to split your dog's calorie intake three ways between meat, vegetables and fiber. Or feed a slightly higher percentage of meat and reduce the other two components proportionally.

If you’re like most dog owners though, time is an issue. In that case the best way to ensure that your dog gets a healthy, balanced, nutritious diet is to feed a vet approved, premium or super premium dog food.

Be sure to pick the right variety, whether puppy, senior, diet, large breed, small breed etc. There are even variants that are specially formulated for specific breeds.

Two things you should definitely avoid feeding your dog are cheap commercial dog food, and table scraps.

Most of the brands you find on the supermarket shelves fall into this category. They often have grain as their primary component and are therefore lacking in the nutrients needed in a healthy canine diet. There is also evidence to suggest that some of the colorings and preservatives used may be behind a whole catalog of ailments and diseases.

You should also avoid feeding your dog table scraps. Human food is generally not good for a dog as it is high in fat and may contain harmful ingredients like garlic or onions. A dog that is regularly fed from the table is also likely to become a habitual beggar.

Helpful Dog Travel Hints

A holiday with your dog can be a really fun time for both of you. But you will have to do a bit of forward planning.

You can start by doing your homework into what is required to take your dog to the countries you plan to visit. For some countries, these restrictions are severe. The UK for example enforces a 6 month quarantine on animals that are not on the PETS scheme.

But even relatively pet-friendly countries have regulations you'll need to comply with.

Then there's the accommodation issue. If you are planning on staying at a hotel or resort, you'll want to find a pet-friendly one at your destination and book early.

The good news is that more and more hotels are accepting pets these days.

Next up, there are travel arrangements to be made. If you'll be using air or rail travel, the best advice is to have a specialized pet travel company make the arrangements for you. Mistakes can be costly and even tragic, so don't take the chance.

If however, you are going to be traveling by car you can make the arrangements yourself, and there are quite a few things you'll have to take care of.

First up, you'll need to consider a dog carrier, or a special doggy seat belt to restrain your dog in the car. From a safety perspective this is a must, and in some countries it is even a legal requirement.

It is also important to remember that dogs become dehydrated quite easily. Take a water bowl and plenty of water along, and never leave your dog in a parked car, especially in warm weather.

Also, remember to pack leashes, harnesses, collars, toys, dog bed and anything else your dog will need. You'll also need to do some planning as to where you'll stop overnight, and find dog friendly accommodation there. And plan for regular stops so that your dog can stretch his legs and relieve himself.

But there is even more stuff to consider. At your destination, make sure that you buy a cheap dog tag, with your name and local number, for your dog. If you are traveling internationally your dog will have to be micro-chipped, but the id tag gives you extra peace of mind.

You should also carry a photograph of your dog with you, in case your dog gets lost.

Make a point of getting the number and location of a local vet. In a crisis, the last thing you want is to be doing is searching for this information.

Be sure to comply with local bi-laws and regulations. These will normally include keeping your dog on a leash and picking up after him. It’s common courtesy to do this anyway, even if there are no local laws in place.

At this point you're possibly thinking if all this work is worth it. For an enjoyable, stress-free vacation in the company of our best friend, I'd say it definitely is.

Dogs, or CanIs lupus familiaris to give them their scientific name, are an incredibly diverse species of animal. Within the genus you'll find an amazing array of body shapes, sizes, coat lengths, and coat colors.

So different are they, that you may be tempted to think they are not even closely related, but you'd be wrong. In fact all dogs, from a Great Dane to a teacup Yorkie and everything in between, are virtual anatomical copies of each other.

It is broadly accepted that the dog, as we know it today, descends from the wolf. We may have changed the appearance of dogs in countless ways, but under the hood, the basic anatomical model is that of the wolf.

In common with wolves, dogs have;

* A skeletal structure designed for running and jumping.

* Loose and flexible front legs with disconnected shoulder bones that act as shock absorbers when running.

* Powerful back legs giving them a burst of speed off the mark, and excellent leaping ability.

* Small, tight feet, with fused wrist bones allowing them to quickly change direction, even when running at speed.

* A cardiovascular system that gives them the endurance to track prey for hours without getting tired.

* A tail which is used for signalling and is very important to pack hunters.

* Powerful jaws with razor-sharp teeth specialized for catching and killing prey.

Other Interesting Facts About Dog Anatomy

Through selective breeding, human have changed the appearance of dogs in myriad ways. But some interesting recent research suggests that many of the changes may actually have occurred naturally.

Every dog coat color is either a variant of yellow, or a mutation of the beta defensin gene, which produces a black coat.

Dogs keep themselves cool in a number of ways, including panting, sweating through the paw pads, and through an ingenious "heat exchanger" that keeps body heat away from the brain.

All dogs have 42 teeth – Six pairs of sharp incisors in the front of the mouth, two pairs of large canines (fangs) plus premolars and molars.

Dogs have a unique system for keeping their eyes clean, a top and bottom eye lid, plus a third lid that sweeps across the eye like a windshield wiper.

A dog's skeletal structure includes 361 bones, but the size, shape and placement of the bones differs significantly from breed to breed.

A dog that is startled, stressed or anxious may raise its hackles (the hair along the neck and spine). This is made possible by tiny muscles that are attached to each hair shaft where it emerges from the skin.

A key element in the success of dogs as a species is their poorly developed sense of taste which allows them to eat things that other animals would run a mile from.

Dogs are one of the most successful species on earth, and much of this is down to their supreme adaptability, and an anatomy that is perfectly suited to their environment.

Animals that are in pain or that have certain health conditions may lash out or behave inappropriately. This is how animals communicate the fact that there is something wrong with them, since they are unable to inform us directly.

If there are certain things that set your dog off causing bad behavior, then keep his mind focused on other things as you pass by what provokes this bad behavior. Keep your dog busy if you come across other dogs while on a walk. This can help reinforce good behavior.

A consistent schedule of feeding and potty-time is very important when house training your dog. This can train your dog to whine or come get you when he feels the urge, so you can let him out and prevent him from doing his business inside. This helps your puppy learn to "hold it" for a bit, until he knows it's time to go out and will help save you money on carpet cleaning.

Consistency is one of the keys to successful dog training. Have a set list of commands that everyone in the household knows. Anyone needing to handle your dog should follow the same program, using reward for good behavior and taking care to never reward bad behavior. If the dog gets different responses from different people, he can get confused.

When you discipline your dog, your tone is an important factor. Dogs are more receptive to the tones their masters use than you might realize. It is okay to be appropriately stern.

You do not want to over-stress your new pup by trying to teach him too much too quickly. Puppies do not have a very long attention span and limited energy, keep it brief and positive. A training session that wears your puppy out is going to turn into an unpleasant memory, making him less likely to respond well to subsequent sessions, and more inclined to ignore what you are trying to teach him.

If you are looking to train your dog to not use the bathroom inside, housebreaking pads are counter productive. The potty pads or the wee-wee pads often leak which can leave enzymes behind that will confuse the puppy as to where they should be going potty. Wee-wee pads can also train your dog to think that other items that are the same shape are a potty area as well. It is better to teach your dog that outdoors at all times is the best choice.

Wearing a puppy out by overloading it with information and training is counterproductive. A puppy only has short bursts of energy and doesn't have a long attention; you've got to keep your training sessions positive and short. Your puppy will happier with the experience, and less resistant to your future efforts. He will be looking forward to them instead.

Your dog has to have a consistent set of rules in order to learn the difference between right and wrong. Doing this involves setting firm boundaries for acceptable behavior which all family members are willing to enforce. Any inconsistency by others in applying the rules you have trained your dog to follow will undo your hard work.

Don't use doggy treats as your sole positive reinforcement mechanism. Treats are effective for teaching proper behaviors. You probably don't constantly have a treat in your pant's pockets. Giving your dog physical attention and praise will reinforce his positive behavior, as well as save you money and him calories.

Check over your doge before taking it to the veterinarian. Inspect his whole body up and down with your hands, and make sure to reward him for good responses. Get him ready to be tolerant by having his paws and teeth checked at. Your friends can help out, too.

Your dog has to have a consistent set of rules in order to learn the difference between right and wrong. Everyone in your house needs to set these boundaries too. It can erase what you have accomplished.

Be careful not to spend too much time at once training your dog. You will bore your dog if your spend a lot of time on just one thing. Only spend 10 minutes during the first couple of sessions.

When crate training an indoor dog or puppy, you may try some tricks. If the dog doesn't want to go inside the crate, put a rawhide bone in there and shut the door. Once they know the treat is in the crate, you will have to hold them back to stop them from getting the bone because they'll be so eager. Praise your dog once he gets into the crate.

Advice And Secrets for Training Older Dogs

In the past, someone who was looking for a dog almost always bought, or adopted, a puppy. But these days it is just as likely that a prospective dog owner will head for the local shelter and bring home an older dog.

This is a laudable trend and one that I hope with continue to grow but it does raise some issues. For example, unlike a puppy that can be taught patterns of behavior, older dogs come with established ways of being, and sometimes with major behavioral problems like anxiety and aggression.

Often this will result in the dog being taken back to the shelter, which is a pity because most dogs, regardless of age or temperament, are trainable if you employ a good method and put in the hours required.

But before you get down to training there are two ideas you need to get out of your head. Firstly, get rid of the notion that you should pity the dog.

It's a sad reflection on our society that many of these dogs have been beaten, mistreated and abused, but unfortunately you can't change that. What you can do is provide love, care and affection. You can show them that not all humans are like those that have hurt them. But pity plays no role in this.

Dogs have an infinite capacity for forgiveness, so address your attention towards creating a home where the dog feels safe and to providing consistent but kind leadership, and gentle training.

The other misconception is that negative training methods are needed to control "difficult" dogs. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Outdated methods like choke chains and shock collars do not work. The are barbaric and no reputable trainer uses them. If someone even suggests them to you, just walk away.

No only that, but they can be dangerous. You may be dealing with a dog that was previously abused by these methods, and if so, they dog may well attack you. This treatment of a previously abused dog may also cause other behavioral problems, so there really is no dividend in negative training methods. Just don't do it.

What is the best training method to use? Most dog trainers will tell you that positive, reward-based training is the only way to go. Start at the beginning with crate training, house training if needed, and then some basic obedience training.

Be mindful that your results will be less predictable than if you were training a puppy, and that you’ll need tons of patience and persistence.

Also bear in mind that not all dogs are as easy to train as others. Many factors come into play, such as breed, age and state of health. With an adopted dog there is also the issue of an unknown past life which may have left the dog traumatized and fearful.

Proceed slowly with patience and persistence and you will succeed. If you doubt that, look up Frank Inn on Wikipedia. This famous Hollywood dog trainer found almost all of his canine movie stars at dog shelters.

Dog Whining And What You Can Do About It

Dogs have a wide vocabulary that includes barking, growling, howling, as well as whining. All of these convey their own message. Whining for example is normally interpreted as a sign of distress, and as such instantly draws our attention.

Dogs, being smart creatures, have figured this out. And some dogs, especially those with dotting owners, have taken their whining skills to an art form.

Why Dogs Whine

Dogs generally whine when they are hurt, anxious or afraid. Certain dogs have also learned how to "pretend" to be afraid or anxious in order to get attention. However, dogs have a high pain threshold, so if your dog whines in pain, you want to identify the source of pain and have it treated immediately.

The other causes of whining are fairly easy to treat. All it takes is a few, easy to implement, steps. How to Stop the Whining For Good

Let's discuss anxiety whining first. Often this is related to the dog being left alone. The dog has noticed a routine you go through before leaving the house, something as simple as turning off the TV and activating the alarm.

This then becomes the trigger that sets off your dog's whining. In order to address this you'll need to break the connection between your actions, and the dog's reaction. There are a number of ways to do this.

You could simply vary your routine. Or you could confuse the dog by getting ready to leave, and then not go out. Another alternative is to go through your whole routine, then go out for 30 seconds or so, before coming back in.

These are all easy ways to break the connection the dog has built up between your routine, and the fact that it results in him being left on his own. It sounds simplistic, but it works.

Another cause for whining is fear. For example a dog left alone in an empty house may become fearful and anxious. The solution here is simply to cut down his space.

Confine the dog to a single room or, better yet, to a dog crate, and you eliminate the fear and, by extension, the whining.

Crate training is definitely something you should do with your dog because it provides him with a safe, "den" environment and, by extension, calms him down.

Breaking the "Attention Whining" Cycle

Dogs are arch manipulators and usually have a bag of tricks that they use to get what they want. For example, small dogs love doing the "sit up and beg trick", because they know it is cute and gets them attention.Similarly, if your dog works out that you come running every time he whines, prepare yourself for plenty of running.

If you know your dog you'll soon see through his efforts to manipulate you by whining, and you'll have to ignore it if you want him to stop.

The Simple Way To Teach A Dog To Roll Over

Folk frequently ask me how they can train their dog to do a spread of tricks. Some of the less complicated ones to begin with is shake a paw, high 5 and roll over. From my personal experience, I have found that you can learn how to teach a dog to roll over in 3 straightforward steps.

  • The very first thing you want to have is some mouth-watering dog treats to coach your dog. It's best to use a special treat that your dog doesn't normally get to eat so that he is enthusiastic about the coaching. I would recommend using turkey sausages because they are inexpensive and simple to cut into tiny pieces for training.
  • Begin your training by putting your dog in a sit position, and then you need to bring the treat next to his nose and down to the ground, and steadily move your hand toward his neck. Give your dog a treat for following your hand and going onto his back. Next, you want to move you hand further away from him so that he rolls over. Ensure that you praise your dog frequently throughout the training. The most enthusiastic you are during your training session, the more your dog is going to love drilling with you.
  • Once your dog can roll over, you will need to say the command "Roll Over!" at the same time that you "lure" him with the treat. Remember to always give him a treat after he rolls over so that he learns what's expected of him.
  • Practice these exercises every day for one week. After that, you'll need to phase out the treats so that your dog can roll over while not having to use treats. I also suggest that you train in different environments; train in your backyard, your local park or at your friend's house "that way your dog will be able to perform his new trick everywhere he is going.

Tips:

Always reward your dog and give him a treat anytime that he is successful. You wish to build on success instead of getting irritated if your dog isn't fully understanding what you need him to do.

Always remember to teach this trick incementally. Which means to get the dog to first turn his head, then move his body onto his side, and eventually to roll over. You want to reward each stage of the rolling over.

And always keep your training sessions short! Your dog will learn more in a short five minutes session than he will with an hour of boring drilling.

Eventhough described as powerful and imposing, obtaining desirable effect from Cane Corso training may not be too difficult due to the fact that this breed is known to be extremely intelligent and very trainable. Moreover, they have that great drive to amuse their owners so making them obey commands using praise as reward is not actually a problem. But as everybody knows, dogs, inspite of their intelligence or capability to learn, don't figure out commands by themselves. They need their owner's guidance for them to become obedient as well as healthy and happy. As a result, training should be provided as early as possible to ensure that good values will be inculcated into their young minds.

Before the actual training starts, owners or potential owners ought to know more regarding the breed first - temperament, care and grooming demands, training as well as health conditions. By knowing such information, it would be easy for an owner to identify what Cane Corso training ways to use, how to deal with the pet when issues come up and what activities to include or avoid when training.

In addition to being powerful and imposing, this breed is also highly suspicious of strangers and might display aggressive behavior if it feels threatened. If this behavior is permitted or left not corrected, it could lead into a habit that can be hard to get rid of. To prevent this problem, Cane Corso puppies need to be socialized appropriately to prevent them from considering a lot of things as strangers. These things include but not limited to sound of siren, firetruck and phone, people, cars as well as other vehicles passing by, delivery men and noisy neighbors.

One impressive trait of this breed is the close attachment it forms with the owner and the impulse to defend their family if danger is at hand. To them, there's nothing better than pleasing their owners and being by their side all the time. This attribute may be used to get the dog to obey several commands like down, sit and stay as well as correct undesirable behavior such as biting, jumping and chewing. To get the most out of this characteristic, an owner will only have to praise and spend time with his pet for every good behavior and ignore it to discourage undesirable behaviors like the ones pointed out.

One more fact an owner needs to bear in mind is the breed's high tolerance to pain. The use of electrical invisible fence may be ineffective to some so other techniques to avoid disappearing acts must be taken into account. But this attribute shouldn't be made into an excuse to punish them physically since hitting the pet with a rolled paper, rubbing the nose on the dirt or crating them for longer durations without food and potty break will do them no good.

Effective Crate Training Tips and Techniques

Crate training involves teaching your dog to spend time in a dog crate - a plastic, wooden or wire enclosure. Many dog owners worry that this is cruel, but in fact, once they are used to it, most dogs really enjoy spending time in the crate.

Being in the crate taps into natural canine behavior, as wolves naturally seek out a warm, safe den in the wild.

The best time to start crate training in the first night the puppy spends in your home. By now you should already have bought a crate that accommodates your puppy's adult size. Buy one with a sliding panel, and adjust the panel, so the pup has just enough space to lie down and turn around.

Don't put a blanket and pillow in the crate, rather use a soft towel which is better at absorbing any spills. If your pup was bought from a breeder, see if you can get a strip of blanket with the mother's smell on it. This will help the puppy accept the crate more quickly.

Often dog owners put the crate in some secluded corner of the house - this is a mistake. Remember that dogs are social animals and thrive on interaction. Pick a spot where there are plenty of comings and goings, so the puppy doesn't feel left out.

For the first few weeks, you should put the crate in your bedroom at night. Expect a ruckus at first. Remember, she's just a baby, taken away from her family and put into a place filled with strange sights, smells and sounds.

Don't pander to every cry though, or you will be up half the night once she figures out that you come running every time she cries.

Within a day or two, your pup will be used to the crate and within a few weeks you can move her out of the bedroom. She'll probably kick up a fuss again, but provided you don't respond to her cries, she will get used to the idea quite quickly.

Pretty soon she'll love her crate and will probably sleep there by choice.

Another benefit of crate training is that it makes potty training so much easier. Dogs are hygienic animals. They will not ‘go’ in their sleeping area. So crate training teaches your puppy to 'hold it in', from an early age.

Remember that your pup will not have the bladder control of an adult dog, so keep her stays in the crate short - no more than an hour at a time.

When she starts barking and whining, take her outdoors immediately. Praise her when she does her business outdoors and she'll virtually house train herself.

As a behavioral dog coach and consultant my stance on desexing dogs is pretty clear.

But as a breeder I'm often asked why I am so against people not desexing their dogs. Let me assure you, that if not for our dedicated breeding program in place with the view to better our selected kind of dog- the Boerboel (South African Mastiff) EVERYTHING at our place would be desexed in a flash!

As our dogs finish their breeding days, they are spayed or Neutered with the hope of guarding against the unavoidable health risks of not desexing them when they were six months old. We customarily lose this gamble and have lost 4 dogs to sexual organ cancers.
So on that subject, here are some of the reasons:

Health of the Dog:

Spaying a male gets rid of the chance of testicular tumours and seriously decreases the likelihood of prostate Problems. Neutering decreases the prevalence of perianal swellings and hernias, which are commonly noted in older, unaltered males.
Neutered males are less sure to try and escape a yard to find a female in season. This reduces the chance of them being hit by cars, getting into fights or lost.

Females spayed before their first oestrous cycle ("heat") seriously decreases her possibility of mammary cancers, ovarian cancer and uterine infection (all of which can be fatal and high-priced to treat).

A spayed female reduces the chance of the neighbourhood stray males from camping out on your lawn attempting to get at your female when she comes into "heat."

Giving birth to a litter can be threatening to your female. Some breeds have a heavy rate of caesarean sections, which are pricey and can be dangerous.

Personality of the Dog:

Spaying and neutering before sexual maturity also offers a temperament benefit.

Males neutered early on in life tend to be less assertive and less distracted.

Fixed males are less certain to scent mark (real problem when they choose to mark inside the house) and less likely to wonder off as the desire to mark will be reduced.

A spayed female also does not hormonally based swings and will definitely be more targeted on you also.

A female with a litter can become aggressive, even to family members. Spaying also makes your female a better companion.

Unwanted dog litters:

Do you know that a single female and male and their pups can produce thousands of offspring in six years? Think, a female can have a litter as young as 6 months and then have one every six months after that. Each litter can have an average of six young and each female offspring will be in a position to breed at roughly half a year of age, the mathematics can be amazing!

A male dog can impregnate as many females as he'll get to in a day.

Because a puppy is cute, does not necessarily imply it will find a home- every year, many thousands of dogs and puppies, thoroughbred and crosses are euthanized in shelters and council pounds. More die on the streets or live shortened lives of neglect, abuse and horrors.

So if you are failing to desex your dog for any of the above reasons please speak to your vet or behavioral dog trainer about what I have discussed here today. I'm absolutely sure he/she'll enlighten you farther!

Useful Advice For Training A Dog

Dog training takes lots of work and if you want to succeed you will have to set aside time every day and stick to a training schedule. Even then, you may still fail, especially if you approach things in a haphazard, disorganized fashion.

These six tips will help you train your dog to be obedient and well-mannered.

1. When to start dog training

A common bit of misinformation about dog training is that you should start training immediately. This theory suggests that time is of the essence, and even one wasted day will make your dog training efforts more difficult. This is almost always bad information, so you can relax and take a step back.

Dog training is not a sprint, but an ongoing process that needs to be paced properly for best results. A dog can learn at any age, but for best results you need to deliver training at the time when the dog is best equipped to receive it.

Most dog trainers will tell you that the “sweet spot” for obedience training is 12 weeks. So don’t rush things.

2. Why you are the best person to train your dog

Aside from the obvious benefit of an obedient dog, training is also a powerful way of establishing dominance. It is also an excellent way of bonding with your dog.

But you'll only achieve these benefits if you do the training yourself. Yes, you can save yourself a lot of hassle by getting someone else to do the training. But its not the best way to go about it.

3. When training a dog, consistency is vital

Dogs are very good at spotting routines and this can be a big advantage to your training. If you are consistent with your schedule, commands and approach your dog will pick this up a lot quicker

4. Only use your dog’s name for positive interactions

Avoid using the dog’s name when scolding him or giving corrections. You want the dog to always associate his name with something positive, so that he never has any hesitation in responding to it.

5. Give rewards that your dog really loves

Although all dogs enjoy a food treat, there are other rewards that are just as effective, such as a toy, a game or straightforward praise and affection. Find out what really motivates your dog and use it to achieve the best training results.

6. Never use physical punishment on any dog

An absolute no-no when it comes to dog training (or dog guardianship in general for that matter) is physically abusing a dog. Aside from the fact that it is barbaric, inhumane and even illegal, it is entirely ineffective. The dog may learn to fear you, but he certainly won’t be motivated to obey.

Dog training takes time and effort, but it is also a very rewarding enterprise if you do it right. The tips above will give you a head start.

Classification of Dog Breeds

When it comes to diversity, no species on earth rivals the dog. Our canine friends come in a vast array of sizes, shapes and colors. Not only that, but they also display vastly different character traits from one breed to another.

A lot of this is due to human intervention. For thousands of years we have bred and interbred dogs to accentuate particular skills and physical characteristics.

However, there is a body of evidence that indicates many of the changes that occurred in dogs were spontaneous. What this suggests is that dogs actually changed their appearance in a way they believed would please us. Now that's devotion!

Fascinating stuff, but there's also a practical purpose to all this.

Let’s assume you want to get a purebred dog as a pet. No doubt you’ll want a dog that suits your lifestyle. It would be foolhardy, for example, to get a Border Collie if you live in a small apartment and are a first class couch potato. You’re likely to end up with a dog that has serious behavioral problems.

Likewise, if you're an outdoor type who wants a dog as a jogging and hiking companion, a Pug or Pekingese is hardly going to fit the bill.

And it's not just energy levels you need to consider. As you begin to put together a picture of your perfect dog, think about the level of affection you want, the level of independence, guarding ability, whether you mind a dog that barks. You'll find there's a breed that matches just about any profile you can think of.

And what about physical appearance, size for example? It's hard to imagine two animals more different than a Saint Bernard and a Chinese Crested, yet both are unmistakably, dogs.

Another major consideration for many prospective dog owners is how much a dog sheds. Some dogs shed hair like a Minnesota blizzard, while others shed very little. Still others, like the Xoloitzcuintle (Mexican Hairless Dog) have none to shed at all!

Trainability is another factor that should be considered. If you’re determined to obedience train your dog, then you’ll want a breed that is pliant and obedient, not the canine equivalent of an obdurate mule.

If trainability is an issue you’ll want to go for dogs that are known to be quick and willing learners, a German Shepherd perhaps, or a Lab, or Doberman.

The breeds you’ll want to avoid are most of the Hound Group, including Bassets, Beagles, and Bloodhounds. Some breeds, like the Dachshund, are known for being particularly obstinate, while certain toy dogs will ignore you as a matter of principal.

And we haven’t even gone into cross breeds and mixed breeds here.

Fact is, there really is a dog breed to suit just about everybody's lifestyle. Which is yours?

It is pretty amazing how much of a difference dog training techniques can have, of course you have to consider certain factors.

To teach your dog some very basic commands, you really don't need to be a professional. The most effective techniques are often the simple ones, and as long as you're willing to spend some time working with your dog, you'll find that you'll eventually succeed. To get the most out of your dog training sessions, use the following principles to help you succeed.

One of the hardest problems dog owners have to contend with separation anxiety, when dogs are unhappy when left alone. This is a fairly common problem, and one reason it's hard to treat is that the problem behavior occurs when you aren't around. The problem of separation anxiety can often be overcome if you follow certain procedures. Make it a point to make brief trips in and out of the house, which will teach your dog that leaving doesn't always mean a long trip. You don't want to coddle your dog too much every time you leave; just make your exit without any fuss. A dog with this condition will be very enthusiastic when you walk in the door; as hard as it might be, disregard this as much as possible. Make sure you're not adding to the problem by making your hellos and goodbyes with your dog too dramatic.

Housebreaking a puppy is probably a first step in a young dog's training. A reliable way to housebreak your puppy is the "crate" technique. Wherever the dog sleeps, instinctively, it is not the place they want to urinate or defecate. Make a little nesting area for the puppy with a comfortable blanket. When the puppy is small, he'll need frequent breaks. Once the puppy is done, give it a reward. This takes some patience on your part, because you'll have to take him in and out of the crate frequently. It's one of the best ways to housebreak a puppy, though. A crate will also be useful to prevent a puppy from chewing things up while you're out.

We hope that what you will have uncovered up to now in regards to dog training, plus additionally the particular information about dog care, is helpful for your requirements. Please do continue reading some more to get supplemental info for this subject.

Dogs who live with families should be obedient with every family member. If only one person trains a dog, the dog may not obey anyone else. He may recognize this person as the pack leader, and no one else. That's why everyone should participate to some degree in the training; for example, have practice sessions where each person calls the dog by name. If everyone who calls the dog has a treat ready, you can quickly teach the dog to respond to every person in the household. This also helps a new dog in the family learn his name. The family can also play ball with the dog, and reward him for bringing it to each person. It's typical for one person to conduct the majority of the training (though it doesn't have to be this way), but the dog should respond to everyone in a household.

Your job is to find the right techniques and strategies to help train your dog, and animal that wants to listen to you. Your dog should be healthy. If it is not, this may be why they are having behavioral issues. Training your dog may require a professional trainer, especially if you do not have the time or ability. In most cases, however, the dog training strategies we've covered here will be effective at getting your dog to obey your commands.

There is no greater joy than a new puppy. Those beautiful big eyes and playful, uncoordinated frolicking will bring you years of fun and love. However, without the proper training your playful pet can easily become an annoying pooch in the blink of an eye. So here are some dog training tips to get you started. Click here to know more about aggressive dog training today.

Give your puppy something to chew on. Having specific items for this purpose will help to train them not to chew on everything. This will reinforce good behavior.

If you are trying to prevent your dog from begging, the best thing to do is ignore the begging completely. Don't respond either positively, with a treat or petting, or negatively, by shouting. Your dog will learn quickly and remember for a long time that the begging ended up with you paying attention to the dog.

Dogs often initiate play by using their mouths. You can teach them that mouthing people is not an acceptable behavior. If your dog mouths you (that is, places a part of your body in his mouth), simply stop all play. Turn your back away from your dog and give him a "time out" of sorts. He will soon learn that mouthing means that he will not get to play, and he should eventually stop engaging in this behavior.

A clicker and a few treats can be a very effective method of training your dog. Because a clicker can be easier for a dog to understand than a voice command, lessons can be quick and productive. Training sessions should not be longer than about fifteen minutes, since dogs do have short attention spans.

You should teach your dog to walk on a loose leash. The process is simple: when taking your dog for walks, if he begins to pull, stop. As soon as the leash loosens, begin walking again. Being consistent with this will teach your dog that he will not get to proceed if he is pulling. This will allow for a much more enjoyable walk for you, and also save your arm muscles from getting too sore!

If you want your dog to be trained to your standards, it is up to you to put the effort in to see the results you want. You must absolutely love your animal, and they will be trained in turn and love you in return. If you love them, they will feel the connection and training will be much simpler.

Does your dog bark excessively? If he does, do not give him treat to quiet him, or raise your voice to quiet him. If he is quiet, offer him treats then, and a lot of attention and praise. By doing this you are encouraging the silent behavior you are after.

Establish where your dog's resting and eating areas are, and don't let him take control of your home. Prevent him from getting in the habit of sleeping in high traffic areas and confiscating sofas and comfy chairs, by redirecting him to his own resting area whenever you find him in the way. Don't make a big production number of this. Just move him along.

Dogs who are afraid of thunderstorms or have some other specific phobia can be calmed with kava-kava. This is a natural, herbal supplement that has a calming effect and acts as a muscle relaxer. Consult your vet about the amount of kava-kava that is safe for your dog. Generally speaking, a large dog can take a single 325 mg capsule.

A good dog training tip is to start training your dog while it's young. Younger dogs are more impressionable, and far more responsive to training than older dogs. Older dogs tend to be stubborn because they already have experience and behaviors that they've become used to for a while.

To get the best results when training your dog, you must be positive that you know what you are doing. The dog brain can easily be trained if the owner knows how to properly train them. Make sure you do your research and have a concrete approach to train your dog. It can be very useful to carry a notepad with your strategies in it, each time you take the dog out to train. It's easy to forget what you've learned, so make a habit of jotting good ideas down.

Dogs love to be loved and praised. Reward your dog with lots of affection and praise. When you train your dog, you can reward with praise such as, "Good dog!" in an upbeat tone. He will also appreciate a hug or a scratch behind the ears. Use lots of praise and your dog will thank you.

A good dog training tip is to always keep chocolate out of your dog's reach. Chocolate is highly poisonous to dogs, but that won't stop them from eating it. Onions are also not good for dogs so it's best to keep them away too. Never leave chocolate lying around.

As a new dog owner, you are faced with many challenges. An Intro To Training Dog Tricks

Training a dog to do tricks can be a brilliant way for dog owners to spend special time with their dog, and at the same time building a deep relationship with him. Training a do to do tricks is extremely simple when you understand the basic ideas of dog training. In this post, I'll talk about them in details in hope to aid other people who might be looking for this information.

1. Dogs learn in the instant.

Humans ponder and reflect on prior experiences to do things better and better. Unfortunately dogs don't learn this way; they find out everything in the instant. This suggests that if you're going to reward or punish a dog for anything, it has got to be while he is doing it.

Let's take coaching a dog to roll over as an example. You can wish and hope that your dog thinks about rolling over for days, but your dog isn't intending to do it unless there are some things in it for him. The way to teach a dog to roll over is by giving him something that he likes shortly after rolling over. So if you were to give your dog a treat each time he roll over, he will be able to learn that rolling over is what earns him the treats!

2. Dogs are inspired by 3 things.

As much as your dog loves you, he can only do things for 3 different things, praise, food or toys. Praising your dog can be physically touching and petting your dog together with great vocal support on your part. I don't believe that I have to tell you about treats, but most dogs are highly inspired by food and treats due to highly survival instincts. Some dogs also love toys very much! Some breeds are more active than others so a tug toy or a squeaky toy can be highly rewarding for some dogs.

Which one of those 3 motivators is the strongest with your dog? Often dogs will value one of each one of the 3 motivators more than the other 2. There is nothing messed up with your dog valuing one over the others; it just means this is what you ought to use to train your dog to do tricks.

3. Tricks are limitless.

The one secret about tricks is that there are limitless amounts of tricks you can train. There is sure to be a harder and more exciting trick to train your dog. When you're only starting out coaching your dog to offer you a high five is a great learning experience and can be quite challenging! But when you have mastered these tricks, you can move on to much more complicated tricks like jumping over obstacles, exclaiming requests or even jumping rope. Surprising Dog Language Facts

Dogs have a unique way of communicating, based largely on body language. Learn to interpret this language and you'll suddenly start to understand your dog in ways you never thought possible before. Plus, you'll find your training efforts instantly become more successful, as you communicate with your dog on his level.

Unfortunately the "English to Dog Language" dictionary has yet to be invented. However, following the pointers below will give you a solid framework for understanding dog language.

Here are the most important things you'll need to watch for in your dog's body language.

Standing Still - When a dog suddenly stops moving and stands very still, he's indicating to you that he wants to be left alone. He may also do this if he's standing guard over some or other possession. You may also see this behavior if a dog is given a treat while there are other dogs around.

Exposing his Teeth - Dogs seldom attack without warning. They may growl, raise their hackles, and posture. And if all else fails, they'll show their teeth as a final warning that they're about to attack. The best thing to do is to back down.

Growling – Along with flashing the teeth, the dog often will start growling. If this doesn’t get the necessary response the dog may well attack. Many people scold or punish the dog for growling or showing its teeth. This is dangerous because if the dog is not allowed to give a warning he may escalate straight to an attack.

Raising the Hackles - When a dog raises the hair on his back, he is trying to look bigger in order to scare off a threat. It is often a sign of heightened fear, and means to dog may attack.

Putting the tail between the legs - This is a common behavior in timid, fearful dogs. The tail is tucked between the legs to indicate submissiveness, often when the dog is placed in an unfamiliar situation.

Putting the head down - Depending on the context this could be a attempt by a submissive dog to avoid eye contact. Or it could be a playful gesture.

Raising a Paw - This is a friendly gesture meaning, "let's be friends".

Wagging the tail - The tail is one of the dog's most important communication devices, and the one that is most often misinterpreted. A common belief is that a wagging tail suggests happiness, but this is only true if the tail is being wagged loosely. If the tail is moving in rapid, short, side to side flicks, it means that that dog is agitated, while a tail that is wagged while being held between the legs indicates fear, or uncertainty.

In the canine world, body language will always carry more weight than words. Yes, a dog may learn voice commands, but they will always be secondary to posture and movement.

Learn to interpret their language and you'll understand your dog that much better.

Some dogs are so scared of thunderstorms that they are literally a danger to themselves. If your dog has an extreme fear of thunder, speak to your veterinarian. Your veterinarian may recommend and prescribe a mild sedative to give your dog before a storm rolls in. This is often a last-ditch effort when behavior modification cannot handle the problem alone, but it is often beneficial to a dog's quality of life if the problem is severe enough.

Be mindful of exactly what behavior you are reinforcing, so stand your ground and don't give into your pet's persistence. A dog will generally repeat whatever action has previously earned him a reward. Thus, if you give a dog food so that it will stop begging at the table one night, you're only making the dog more inclined to beg for food again, the next night.

Allowing your dog to socialize is a crucial part of training. Some negative pet behaviors come about when dogs have not been introduced to new people (including children), other animals, or a variety of settings. Helping your dog become comfortable with new experiences lessens the chance that your dog will fear or act aggressively in a new situation.

One of the easiest ways for you to begin to train your dog(s) is to research the types of training classes available in your area. Consider checking out the classes and the venues before committing to one so that you can make sure both you and your pet feel comfortable before beginning the training process.

When feeding your dog, always expect the dog to be in a calm state and ready to eat. Hyper activity at feeding time will not allow the pet to properly address feeding rituals. Establish a ritual of a calm animal who sits and waits patiently for you to give food. After this behavior is taught, your dog will probably begin sitting patiently as you prepare their food.

If your dog is sick or injured, don't punish it for doing something outside of it's control. If it vomits in the house, that would normally be considered a bad action, but in the case of sickness they may not be able to control it. Instead take your pet to the vet to see if or what is wrong.

While training your dog, it is important to maintain a calm voice, even if you feel frustrated. If you get angry, your pet is not going to enjoy learning and will not respond well to your commands. Your dog should enjoy the training process rather than dread it.

Be realistic about changing behavior that has gone on for years. If a dog's previous owner or you have allowed a dog to sleep on furniture or jump on people for many years, it will take time to change that long term behavior. If the behavior was addressed when the dog was a puppy, then it can be easier to change the behavior more quickly.

Your dog should learn that nothing in life is free. Have him work to get goodies, no matter how small. Have your pooch "sit" and wait before meals are placed on the floor, and release with a command. Have your dog "sit" and wait by the door before walks. He'll learn patience, and he'll learn to wait for your cue.

Recall training with your dog should always begin in a safe, enclosed space. A fenced backyard or other outdoor enclosure is the perfect place to start. This will allow you to keep your dog safe while you practice the recall command until the dog is 100% trustworthy, while still challenging him with outdoor distractions.

To train a dog careful thought is required by the owner. Before beginning to train a dog one should plan out what their command words are going to be to be the most effective. Words that are not commonly used will help them stick out for the dog. If one knows another language that can also offer more words and sounds to use in training the dog.

For your dog to understand what you are punishing them for, you need to catch them misbehaving. If you reprimand a dog for something that happened hours ago, chances are your dog will not make the connection. And if you choose to ignore your dog to show that you are mad, do not ignore it for more than a few minutes.

When training your dog, make sure to enforce all commands you give. Do not repeat them over and over, but issue them once firmly and make sure your pet follows through. Do not let your dog ignore a command or else he will think that you are not serious and will disregard most of the training session.

Many people are surprised to realize that training their dog is often far easier, far less stressful, and far less time-consuming than they had originally thought. Simple changes in our own behavior, as well as simple techniques that we implement, can result in big improvements in our dog's behavior. The dog will then recognize that when you say sit, if they succeed they will get a treat so they will eagerly sit longer and longer.

Generosity towards your dog goes a long way when you are trying to train your pet. Reward your pooch where rewarding is due and don't be stingy with the doggie treats. You and your pet both deserve a reward for all your hard work and make sure to put enough time aside for your dog's training.

They may be intelligent and really trainable, but every Cane Corso owner knows that Cane Corso training can be a tad difficult especially if this breed's defensive intuition kicks in. They may even display aggressive behavior that could pose danger to anyone around including itself. That's the reason Cane Corso gurus recommend that this breed be provided with the training it requires as early as possible since training seeks to assist these four-legged friends behave and respond in ways tolerable by humans.

Formidable and imposing as they may seem, there are many methods to obtain positive result from training this breed. Whether you are training your dog the very basic commands or the most complicated tricks, you will always have to start using the most basic training tips. These basic tips are not only easy to follow but are also building blocks for more complicated training someday.

Cane Corso training must begin early.

Due to their imposing personality, this breed is more likely to exhibit aggressive behaviors when confronted or sees the need to defend their owners. Hence to avoid aggressive behavior from developing, socialization should be done when they're really young. Through this, Cane Corso puppies will meet new people, go to new places and get to experience many things hence will not consider such things as odd or threatening.

Learn more regarding the breed.

A dog's care, grooming and training demands, personality and health issues vary from the other depending on the breed, age and even previous living condition (if abandoned by previous owner). Hence to find out the training technique that would suit your dog ideally, it is a good idea to learn more about it by observing how it behaves to several scenarios. Recognizing the pet's health state is also necessary in determining its physical limitation.

Establish a bond with your pet.

By knowing more about and spending time with your dog, the two of you can eventually form a fantastic connection with one another. When this happens, it won't be too hard for you to get your furry friend to obey commands you are asking it to accomplish. Be wary though as this breed has a tendency to form close attachment to their owner thus prone to lead to canine separation anxiety (CSA).

Give rewards when needed.

Rewards are what motivates a dog to obey a command. The concept behind this is that, when a puppy exhibits a desired behavior, giving of reward seeks to encourage it to repeat the behavior it is being rewarded for. Reward could be anything the dog find gratifying from praise and time to play to the most tasty treat you can find.

Avoid physical abuse.

Although some owners find it tempting to hit their dogs when an accident is committed, control is needed not to do so since physical abuse will do the two of you no good. In fact, it'll only make matters worse since it may cause fear and other problems.

This sturdy built breed with very thick double coat is well known for being suspicious of strangers and over protective of its owners in addition to property. This temperament, eventhough beneficial to the safety of owners, can be among the reasons this breed is considered as risky dogs by some since quite a few dog bite instances are linked to them. But despite the danger this breed can possibly bring, owners or prospective owners don't need to be fearful for there are useful strategies on how to deal with this issue and that is appropriate Chow Chow training.

Similar to other dog breeds specifically those with dominant and strong personality, training a Chow Chow should begin at a really young age. Training at this point in time usually calls for comprehensive socialization with the mother dog and other pups in the litter. This is valuable in creating social relationships as well as getting them used to common sights and sounds. It's also during this period that a pup discovers about biting and how to control it.

Termed as bite inhibition, it is a response in which a dog inhibits or regulates the force of its biting so as not to harm or cause injury to anyone. Supposedly, a dog learns this when playing together hence explains why a dog mustn't be taken away from the mother and the rest of the litter at a very young age. The theory of bite inhibition is that, when the puppy bites its sibling too hard, that sibling will yelp, cease playing and neglect the rough puppy. When this happens whenever a pup bites too hard, that pup will soon realize that play and pleasure ceases when the biting is too hard hence will have to regulate the force of its bite for continued fun.

Owners can use this theory during Chow Chow training. If your Chow Chow pup begins to bite harder than it is supposed to, yelp and say something like “ouch” or “oww” and then stop interacting with that puppy. Allow a few seconds to pass and when the biting continues, repeat the initial step. If the initial step appears ineffective, you may also need to abandon the room or area where you're at for a few seconds. While you're walking away, never look back or budge despite its attempt to play.

This approach must motivate your puppy to bite less hard and less often. Smacking your puppy's nose or hitting the head must not be utilized when challenged with this problem. It can do more harm than good since a pup will see the need to defend itself thus will be prompted to bite.

You travel often and leaving your dog is just not an option. For times that you need to transport your dog by crate, it is highly important that you train it ahead of time in order to save yourself frustration. This article will go into specific methods you can do to prepare yourself and your dog.

Do you want to know more about dog psychology, then read the advises below now.

When you are working on crate training with your new dog or puppy one should always take steps to let them know it's their home. At meal times always put their bowl of food inside the crate leaving the door open the whole time while they are eating. Thus they will associate a good thing like yummy food with the crate.

Praise your dog lavishly every time he or she comes closer to following commands. For instance, when first teaching the dog to come, praise for turning in the right direction. Then praise for a few steps toward you. Eventually, praise the dog enthusiastically for running straight to you at the first call. The dog associates obedience with the joy of pleasing you and shares in your excitement.

Teaching your dog a fun trick, such as "play dead" can be a fun way of distracting him. When your dogs behavior is bad, simply use the command you have established for his trick instead of using negative punishment. This provides for a fun activity for your dog and creates a positive environment for you as well.

Make training fun for you and your dog. Choose treats that your dog loves, and give lots of excited praise for good results and even good efforts. Keep sessions short and lively. Give your dog plenty of chances to succeed by practicing commands that he or she knows well, but also add variations and new lessons to keep training interesting.

Using a crate when you're not at home can be very effective, especially for a young puppy. The crate keeps your puppy safe and secure, and also protects your home from chewing and bathroom accidents. Your puppy can learn to feel comfortable and protected in his crate home while you are away.

Remember that you must respect your dog's boundaries. The fact is that you cannot change a dog from being a dog. Your dog does not speak English, and you cannot rationalize his behavior with him. Some dogs will have issues so severe that you can only minimize the impact of the issue on their lives. Consult with a trainer about your dog's specific limitations, and what you can reasonably expect.

Don't interact with your dog when you are frustrated or angry. Simply put your dog up and take a break. Training will proceed much more efficiently when you return. Each of you will be rested, have a fresh outlook, and be ready to tackle that seemingly elusive training task once again.

Take care to not punish any signs of desirable behavior. For example, if your puppy goes outside like they should, you should not immediately leave them. If they want to be near you and then you have just up and left, it will confuse them because they did something right and they may feel like they are being punished.

In conclusion, it is extremely challenging to prepare your dog for the entertainment industry. However, this may pay off in the long run both for popularity of you and your dog as well as financially. Follow the tips and tricks that have been provided in this article and you should see success in training your dog.

Hints And Tricks for Training Older Dogs

When you hear of someone of getting a new dog you probably think of a puppy. But with the growing trend towards adopting dogs from shelters, it’s just as likely these days that the new dog will be an adolescent, or even an adult dog.

This is a laudable trend and one that I hope with continue to grow but it does raise some issues. For example, unlike a puppy that can be taught patterns of behavior, older dogs come with established ways of being, and sometimes with major behavioral problems like anxiety and aggression.

Unfortunately, this often leads to the dog being returned to the shelter. A great pity because, with a method and a bit of application, most problem behaviors can, in fact, be corrected.

But before you get down to training there are two ideas you need to get out of your head. Firstly, get rid of the notion that you should pity the dog.

Many of these dogs have suffered at the hands of humans, and many have stories that would stir all but the hardest heart. But your pity won't help them get over that. What will help is your patience love, care and understanding.

Dogs have an infinite capacity for forgiveness, so address your attention towards creating a home where the dog feels safe and to providing consistent but kind leadership, and gentle training.

The other fallacy is that a "difficult" dog can somehow be forced into compliance with negative training methods. This is quite simply untrue.

Outdated methods like choke chains and shock collars do not work. The are barbaric and no reputable trainer uses them. If someone even suggests them to you, just walk away.

These methods are possibly the worse thing you can do with an aggressive dog. Effectively what you're doing is approaching an already aggressive animal with violence, and that my friend, is just asking to be bitten. So don't ever use violent training methods with any dog.

How then, should you approach training an older dog? Well, for starters, appreciate that dogs are receptive to learning at any age. Start with the basics - crate training, and house training (if needed), then move on to basic obedience work. Above all keep it positive and reward-based.

You'll need to be patient and persistent because your dog will already have established behaviors and will likely be more difficult to influence than a puppy.

Also bear in mind that not all dogs are as easy to train as others. Many factors come into play, such as breed, age and state of health. With an adopted dog there is also the issue of an unknown past life which may have left the dog traumatized and fearful.

But with persistent application you will succeed. Need a role model? Well Frank Inn, the famous Hollywood dog trainer found virtually all his star performers (including Higgins, the dog who played Benji), at dog shelters.

Picking The Coolest Dog Toys For A Dog

Dogs are fun loving creatures who enjoy nothing more than a good game. And while playing games with your dog is definitely something you should do, there will be times when you are not around, and the dog has to keep himself amused.

This is where dog toys come in handy. And these days dog toys come in hundreds of varieties so there's a toy out there to suit every kind of dog.

Pick a few from the list below and you’ll be able to keep your dog happy, and out of mischief, when you’re not around.

Kong Toys – If you have a dog that loves to chew, then a Kong toy is the answer. These rubberized toys and virtually indestructible, so even your Pitbull can chew away for hours and not make much of an impact.

A cool feature of these toys is that they have a hollow center that you can stuff treats into. The dog then has to try and get the treat out, so it's great for working his problem solving abilities.

Tug-a-War Toys – Dogs love to pull, but beware of cheap rope toys that fray and can be swallowed by your dog.

Kong offers a solution here too, a clever little toy that is basically two rubber balls in a canvas holder and with a canvas rope attached. Very hard to break, and the balls squeak too, just to make the game more interesting for your dog.

Frisbees - Many dogs love this game, but the plastic disc many people use can actually be dangerous, as they can shatter when bitten, and cause serious cuts.

The best disc to use for dog games is the Frost Bite Frisbee which is made of a soft, pliable plastic that punctures when the dog bites it rather than shattering. It flies pretty good too!

Puzzles - Dogs are natural problem solvers, so a toy that challenges your dog to work something out in order to earn a treat is a good choice.
